Primo Grill Forum FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

Is there any danger in starting the first fire?

Not really. Some suggest a small amount of charcoal and a small fire at first. This may help in removing any moisture content and to let things settle, but the firebox is made of a non-expanding ceramic formula.

Does a Primo grill need to be 'seasoned' like other smokers?

No. The Primo will cook as well on the 1st cook as it does the 101st cook. The pretty white inside of the Primo will become smoke and grease stained as you cook, but that won't affect how food tastes nor how the grill cooks.

What is the best way to start a lump coal fire?

Several commercial starters are available. Most are small wax impregnated chunks that start easily and burn until charcoal has started. Some use the electric starter coil. Some use the metal chimney that uses news paper to start a hand full of charcoal that will be added to the main bed of charcoal. Small propane and MAPP gas torches are prefered by some. They are easy to use small torches, some with auto-ignition, they consume very little gas, so a tank of fuel lasts a long time, and you can start several hot spots in your charcoal very quickly. MAPP is a hotter burning gas than common propane. NEVER-EVER use flammable or combustable liquids to start a fire in a ceramic grill

What is the best lump coal to use in a Primo Smoker?

Any brand will work fine. Some lump charcoal is harder and slower burning than others. Charcoal comparisons and ratings can be found through a link in the Primo User Forum "Charcoal and Smoking Woods message board.

How do I clean my Primo

The outer shell is baked on and will withstand about any method of cleaning. Ceramic grills should be cleaned only when they are cool. Windex, 409, Degreaser, or just soap and water will clean the outside. Abrasives such as Barkeepers Friend or Comet can be used on stubborn areas also. The inside does not require cleaning very often other than a good brushing of the cooking grate and ash removal once in a while. Ash need not be completely removed. All that is needed is for there to be enough room between ash and charcoal grate for airflow. Ash can be vacuumed out or dragged out with an angled tool. The top vent will build up grease deposits after a few cooks, but this will help the lid seal, so don't be concerned about grease buildup unless it becomes a problem to slide lid operation. Metal parts can be washed with a soft brush or rag using soap and water. A drop of oil on moving metal parts will help keep them moving smoothly. NEVER use water inside a ceramic grill. ALWAYS do cleaning when the grill is cool.
